When I was a kid, the Legion of Super-Heroes was my favorite comic. Looking back at those issues today, let's just say they don't hold up very well to the test of time. Although hokey, they are still fun to read, and they have given the comic-loving world the highest ratio of lame characters perhaps in any title. Ever. See if you remember any of these doozies.
10. Bouncing BoyHe was able to bounce of walls like a super-ball. Wonderful power for entertaining the kids at a party. In battle, it didn't work out as well. He even lost his powers once because he wackily bounced into a matter shrinking machine. Most men would avoid that machine like the plague, due to obvious reasons. Not our boy Chuck Taine.
9. Duo Damsel
She used to be Triplicate Girl, but one of her duplicates bit the dust, so then she became Duo Damsel. You know, maybe that was like a sign from God or something, Duo Damsel. Perhaps you should quit because you have no other powers besides making two of you." Great for your husband, not so much for fighting the Sun Eater. Married Bouncing Boy (see above) and had a lame baby squared.
8. Ferro Lad
On the surface, his powers aren't totally lame. He can make himself super-duper invulnerable at will, and has strength on the level of Superboy. What makes Ferro Lad lame is 1) his costume, 2) his name (I guess DC wanted some kind of "Iron Man") and 3) he was introduced as a character with the sole purpose of dying. He lasted all of seven issues (eight if you count the appearance of his ghost). You never wanted to get too attached to a legionnaire during the Silver Age (think Chemical King, Invisible Lad, Triplicate Girl, Lightning Lad, etc). Usually, soon after their introduction, they had their atoms scattered across the galaxy. Welcome to the big-time, mort.
7. Karate Kid
At first glance, having an expert hand-to-hand combatant on a team is a good idea. To train people. However, sending him into battle against murderous, super-powered villains seems a little reckless. Even with incredible fighting skills, I would pick Mordru in a battle against Karate Kid. Emerald Empress would fry him but good. Yes, I know he is supposed to be the greatest martial artist in the world. Muhammad Ali is supposed to be the greatest boxer ever. His super-name might be the Pugilist. Would you bet on the Pugilist in a battle against Validus? Me, neither.
6. Green Boy, Color Boy (Tie)
These two applicants were rejected for legion membership. With good reason. Whenever their creative batteries ran dry, the creators looked no further than their first-grade knowledge of color. So, here's the rundown of their amazing powers. Well, Green Kid could turn things green. Great. Color Boy could turn things ANY color. The Flash villain Rainbow Raider was lame in the 20th century. 1000 years into the future does not make this power any cooler. At least another legion reject, Golden Boy, could turn things into actual gold. This was deemed unworthy because although gold has value in the future, the Legion wants none of that. They have R.J. Brande, ya know.
5. Rainbow Girl
With Rainbow Girl, it wasn't just her powers that were lame, but it was also the Legion's judgment. In short, Rainbow Girl actually had some potential, but was crippled by some one's cruel joke. She could create four forms of herself, which by my count is twice as many as Duo Damsel. And these forms actually had powers! Her red form created super-heat. Her blue form created super-cold. The yellow form made super brightness (o.k., not so great, but if you could blind someone then whammy them with heat and cold, that's a pretty good combo). Her green form made Kryptonite rays. Therefore she had to be rejected, because she was a danger to Superboy and Supergirl.WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? First of all, what are the chances of someone creating radiation from a planet destroyed over 1000 years in the past? Of all the planets in the universe? And that it would effect the only two survivors of said planet? It boggles the mind. Couldn't they have made some lead armor for the green form? Or left her at home in her lead room? The Legion basically said, nope, we don't want someone who can generate heat, cold, and blind people in a coordinated attack. We want Duo Damsel.
4. Dream Girl
The ability to see the future would be a wonderful power to have on a team. If it actually worked. Dream Girl was notorious for having visions that were misinterpreted. For example, something might explode, but she wouldn't see that no one was actually hurt. Furthermore, she would see an image, but wouldn't know the details surrounding it. Finally, she couldn't fully control her power, so she wouldn't see all the important events, only random ones. For example, one day Superboy might be killed by Tharok wielding a kryptonite ray, and she would be clueless. "Didn't see that one coming," was her legion battle cry.
3. Matter-Eater Lad
Now we are leaving the "somewhat lame" portion of the list, and are entering the truly crazy, whacked-out zone. The area where you really suspect the creators were using mind-altering medicinals when brainstorming. For example, if you were in the 30th century, what would be an amazing super-power? Eating anything? Heck, I had some roommates in college who had Matter-Eater Lad's power. MEL could eat metal; my roommates could eat two-week old pizza with curdled milk followed by a Pabst Blue Ribbon chaser. I call that contest a wash.
2. Ronn Kar
This Legion reject could transform his body to paper thinness. I guess this would be useful if Validus stepped on him. Maybe they thought he could slip under doors to steal documents or something. Because I'm sure security will regress 1000 years from now. Perhaps he might also be able to sneak up on somebody by slowly wadding sideways toward them and keeping completely vertical. Then beating them senseless with his paper-thin arms.
1. Arm Fall Off Boy
Thank goodness, he was also a Legion reject. He had the power to detach his left arm and whack things with it. No joke.People in physical therapy could probably kick his butt. I really have no more words to say here about him. I think I might need some of those mind-altering substances to truly appreciate this character and the depths of his lameness.
